Modernising the Bungalow
How do you add to a Heritage Bungalow without pasting old character onto the new additions?
One of our earliest projects. Our clients, (one a heritage consultant) were seeking a house that would open up to the rear garden, but be sympathetic to the heritage listed Californian Bungalow.
The additions reinterpret the ‘lean-to’ roof and then reinvert the roof towards the garden as a skillion that borrows detailing from the bungalow’s projecting awnings and exposed timber rafters.
Facing north-west, external louvre blinds protect the interior from the harsh sun, yet on those occasions when extended family come over, the back opens up like a big verandah over a deck that allows the life of the party and the home to spill out to the exterior.
The result is true contemporary living with a respect for the character of the existing house thereby truly ‘modernising the bungalow’.
“The result for us is an addition that we are very pleased with and enjoy living in. We fight over the bench seat bathed in midwinter sun; we smile when we catch sight of the night sky through our highlight windows; we feel a great deal of satisfaction that we’ve put away all of our ‘stuff’ in the extensive storage; and most of all we enjoy the beauty in the elegant details of our living space.”
